Since 1998 I have been teaching swimming lessons and have found much joy in helping my students learn the fundamentals of swimming and water safety and to see many of my students grow to love swimming and push themselves to attain their next swimming goal.
No matter what level swimmer a student is, I feel I can teach them something new. With beginner swimmers I teach in a way that makes them feel comfortable and safe, while teaching them new skills. I want my students to always feel safe and comfortable in the water which is why I never make a student do something they simply are not comfortable doing. I feel that with my teaching expertise and through building trust I can encourage students to try new skills and techniques on their own terms. I also strive to make the lessons fun so the student is excited for every lesson.
For more advanced swimmers I focus on stroke perfection, technique, and endurance. I work with the three main strokes (crawl, breast, and back), then add in two resting strokes which are great for using in the ocean (elementary back and side stroke), and then add in the butterfly. Speed is not something I teach until children have mastered technique and displayed the ability to be safe in the water. We work on stroke perfection while building endurance (10 laps of each stroke before speed work is brought into the mix). Endurance is important because of the amount of open water we have in the Hamptons. One of the most important parts of teaching endurance is teaching breathing techniques and what to do when you are tired in the water (treading, floating, switching strokes). I teach diving (depending on pool depth) and stress the importance of arms over your head for safety. I also teach flip turns once students have mastered endurance. I teach racing dives before we begin speed work. I do ocean lessons in Southampton to learn how to get in and out of the water safely, rip tide and currents info.
